Elevate the principles of cultural humility.

Strategy
Elevate the principles of cultural humility, conceptualized as the “ability to maintain an interpersonal stance that is other-oriented (or open to the other) in relation to aspects of cultural identity that are most important to the [person.]”1 Leaders who practice cultural humility continually reflect on how to put biases and perceptions aside and learn from others, and foster an organizational culture that prompts team members to do the same.
Action Step(s)
  • Reflect on issues that have arisen in relation to hiring practices, racial bias, disparities, and other areas where cultural humility is imperative; identify how these instances might have been better addressed or prevented.
  • Convene team members who are interested in promoting cultural humility to form a committee dedicated to advancing conversations on race, feelings of oppression, and culture across the CHC; keeping staff engaged and invested in the practice of cultural humility; and assisting leadership with identifying and implementing solutions to issues that arise.1

  • Institute the system-level practice of asking both team members and patients about their chosen identities; implement systems to ensure chosen identities are recognized and respected.
